Shoparound: When it comes to funky furniture fashion it's all about transparent plastic.
Mobilia on Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2, specialises in contemporary Italian furniture and stocks a large range of chic, plastic furniture in lots of bright colours as well as a great range of smart storage solutions.
Attracting most attention this summer is the eye-catching X Tile chair on display in the shop's window, which is better known for its starring role in the kitchen of the reality TV show Big Brother. Mobilia is the sole Irish supplier of the transparent tecno polymer chairs made by the Italian company, Cassamania, which could be yours without the tears and drama from €395.
The range is available in six colours and a matching table costs €490.
Otherwise the very reasonable Slim chair by another Italian company, Soft Line, priced at €125, may satisfy your need for funky plastic chairs. What's more, they can double as outdoor chairs, as seen outside trendy restaurant Lemon's new crêperie outlet on Dawson Street.
For a smart occasional chair for a bedroom, kitchen, diningroom or patio area, check out the adorably curvy Tina chair. Also by Soft Line it costs from €135.
A big seller in Mobilia this season is a range of modular living storage solutions, which the shop sourced at the Milan Furniture Fair in April.
Italian furniture maker, Venier, has a clever collection of modular units (called "Logico") of floating shelves, wall-mounted or free-standing cupboards, drawers, TV units, and illuminated shelves - all guaranteed to add both space and contemporary elegance to any room.
The range is available in a huge choice of coloured glossy and matt lacquers or wood finishes. Shelves cost from €70, single wall-hung cabinets from €260 and two-door wall-mounted cabinets from €445.
With space a big issue in most modern homes, modular ranges like Venier's Logico are what people are really looking for, according to Aoife Power from Mobilia.
"People are really stuck for storage space and want some extra storage space but also want it to be pretty. This furniture, with its simple lines, can look good everywhere."
