Is your front door a bit dull and lacking in distinction? First impressions count and it's important that househunters are impressed by the outside of your home. So when it comes to curbside appeal, make sure to pay lots of attention to your front door.

Giving an unkempt front door a facelift should be top of the list for home sellers, according to estate agent Felicity Fox.

"It's one of the first things I tell my clients to do. Your front door will invariably be photographed. So it will be on the brochure, the web and in the newspaper.

"It's the first thing house viewers will notice and it is even more important for Sunday drive-by viewers who are just looking at the outside of your house," she adds.

A good paint job is a must to give a strong, clean feel to your door and make maximum impact.

Period homes will always look good in heritage colours. Go for greens, off-navy, greys and muted reds for your door with the surround done in cream rather than white.

Colortrend's excellent heritage range, called the historic collection, has just been re-launched. It offers a choice of 149 colours from jewett white to bargeboard brown. We like the grey-blue of winter harbour and codman claret. Available from MRCB Paints at €19.49 for 1 litre (01-6798755).

This collection is available in dense flat matt or a low-sheen oil eggshell finish as well as the more traditional high gloss and satin finishes.

Otherwise you can't go wrong with prime red, yellow, blue and green in a high gloss for maximum impact.

Dulux's ready mix colours cost €12.50 for a 750ml tin and its heritage colour range costs €16 for a 1 litre tin of gloss - also available from MRCB Paints.
