Design Solutions: Australian musician Nick Seymour lives with his fashion designer girlfriend Nicola McCutcheon of the Suki & Nic label, in what must be one of the best apartments in Dublin 2.
It's one open space from the Exchequer Street side of the George's Street Arcade buildings through to the side that looks onto the rooftops inside the square.
One open space, that is, except for the bedroom and bathroom.
"When I bought it five years ago it was divided into offices," says Nick.
"When we opened up the space it was obvious that the bedroom would have to be at the front where there are windows and the bathroom on the other side where there are none.
"But the problem was that there would be no natural light there. The bathroom is directly behind the kitchen in the living area, so to capture the light that shines from the windows in the kitchen, we built panels of sanded or smoked glass into the dividing wall. That way daylight filters through to the bathroom."
The glass is from Myra Glass near Francis Street and sits in very simple timber frames.
The result is effective on both sides. At night, when the lights are switched on in the bathroom, a diffused glow comes through to the kitchen.
"We've put daylight bulbs in the bathroom so you get a nice combination of natural and artificial light," says Nick.
"A row of spotlights above the glass on the kitchen side also gives a nice effect on the bathroom side.
But apart from the practical solution they offer, the glass panels also give a slick decorative look to what might have otherwise been just another wall.
