Ice House, on banks of River Moy in Co Mayo, to be expanded into hotel and spaThe owner of the Ice House on the quays in Ballina, Co Mayo has secured permission to expand a proposed hotel and spa development.
Against much local opposition Pearse Farrell received permission from An Bord Pleanála to convert the listed building into a 24-bedroom hotel and spa in 2005.
On the banks of the River Moy, it was built in 1836 as a home for Moy Fishery Managers and an ice store for salmon.
It was bought by Dublin-based accountant Pearse Farrell for more than €1 million from the North Western Regional Fisheries Board in 2004.
The permission is for four spa suites and an additional bedroom in the main hotel.

The developer is also to seek permission to construct a new access road linking the site to Ballyguile Road.
Mixed-used scheme in Deansgrange refused on grounds of height and scale
An Bord Pleanála has refused permission for a large mixed-use scheme in Deansgrange, Co Dublin on the grounds of height and scale.
John Walsh, John McCabe and Richard Murphy were seeking permission to demolish two houses on Deansgrange Road to make way for a development ranging from three to five storeys.
The scheme was to have 49 apartments, two restaurants, two retail units of 48sq m (515sq m), an anchor store of 83sq m (898 sq m), a creche, office and 205 parking spaces.
The board upheld Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's decision, ruling that the proposed five-storeys would be visually obtrusive.
