Bord rejects Cobh development

An Bord Pleanála has overturned planning permission for a residential, commercial and marina development at Connolly Street, Cobh, Co Cork. The proposal was for 150 apartments rising to six storeys, retail and office units, a 200-berth marina on the foreshore, a bar, restaurant, three shops, four office units and a roofed viewing platform. Three parties appealed permission for the scheme including Holy Ground Environs Action Group. They say the site, located on the northern side of Cork Harbour, is an important bird area and Holy Ground Strand is a well known place for bird watchers. They also point to traffic problems in the area.

An Bord Pleanála ruled the proposed land reclamation platform, which would accommodate the development, would "fail to integrate with the existing built pattern of Cobh by reason of its scale, form and extent". It also said the development would result in a visually and physically obtrusive form of development at this location.
