Lexus has officially taken the covers of its much-hyped RC-F coupe at the Detroit motor show. It's a high-performance version of the low-slung RC coupe that was originally shown in hybrid and 3.5-litre V6 petrol form last year. For this high performance F version, Lexus has (temporarily) abandoned hybrid power and instead stuck a whacking great V8 engine, of 5.0-litre capacity, in there.
With 450hp, it's more powerful than the new BMW M3 and M4 (which clock in at 425hp) and with no turbos to mask the throttle response, it should make for a pretty thrilling drive. To control that kind of grunt, the RC has been given a thorough aerodynamic and suspension work-over, with lessons taken from the experience gained building the now-legendary LF-A supercar.
Like that car, the RC-F gets an active rear wing, which extends at speeds above 80kmh. There are also flaps and diffusers to help massage and direct the airflow more efficiently around and under the car, as well as BMW-like aero vents in the front wings.
On the visual front, there is a nod to this car’s direct predecessor, the IS-F saloon, in the stacked exhaust pipes and the bonnet line is higher and more rounded than that of a conventional RC coupe. Inside, there are unique seats and dials and guages that animate and change depending on which mode (Comfort or Sport) you have selected. There’s even a special steering wheel for the car which features an elliptical rim which is supposed to be more comfortable to hold.
Lexus will also offer three different styles of 19” alloy wheels, the most expensive of which will be finished and polished by a special team of craftsmen.
"The form of each component is carefully designed to contribute to performance," Lexus RC-F chief engineer Yukihiko Yaguchi said. "Unique air outlets in the hood and rear section of the front fenders contribute to optimum engine cooling and handling stability. They create an aggressive look that immediately conveys the expectation of a dynamic driving experience."
