This is a computer-aided photo of what is rumoured to be the Volkswagen Tupi, named after one of the largest Indian tribes in Brazil. Though bonnet, headlights, c-post and tail lights are slightly disguised, they suggest the Tupi will not much more than a reworked Polo. The car is due to go on sale worldwide, under the Tupi name.

While the car has been primarily developed by VW in Brazil to help its efforts in the growing markets of South America, it is also planned as a replacement for the Lupo on sale in Europe. Based on the shortened chassis of the current Polo, the Tupi will be built in both China and Brazil.

Exports to Europe will start in 2005. It's likely that models for Europe will be built in Brazil - shipping from China is more costly.

The engine range will consist of two small three-cylinder units with one-litre capacity.
