This is Mercedes' new E-class-based four-door coupé - nicknamed "the Jag-fighter". Caught testing in the US in advance of its unveiling as a concept at the Frankfurt show in September, it's unlikely to go on sale in Germany until late 2004. Prices there will start at around €69,000, but Irish prices will probably be over €100,000.
Even heavily disguised, the sleek profile is clear. False B-pillar covers hide a neat styling detail - flush fitting glass that gives a pillarless look while keeping the structural strength of a pillar.
Although it is a full four-door, the coupé differs from the E-class saloon with a sharper suspension and more luxurious interior: the coupé will target BMW's 6-series.
It signifies Mercedes' belief that buyers want more stylish and individual models, inspired by British rival Jaguar's current range. While the name has yet to be decided, the car will be positioned between the CLK and CL, so options include naming it the CLS.
Engines will range from a 215 bhp 3.2-litre V6, a five-litre V8 up to a 493 bhp supercharged 5.4-litre V8.
No diesel version has been confirmed, but both six and eight-cylinder diesels will be able to fit into the engine compartment.
Inside, the four individual seats are set low to ensure adequate headroom in spite of the sweeping roofline.
