PastImperfect/history's top 10 best sellers: It's fun to consider, for a moment, the 10 biggest selling single models.
Right at the start, let's get one thing out of the way. No, the Toyota Corolla is not the world's best-selling car of all time as many people seem to believe. Yes, 30 million Toyota Corollas have been sold, but that number includes no fewer than nine entirely different Corolla models. In fact, the Toyota Corolla doesn't even make our top 10.
So what single model holds the top spot? What else could it be, but the Volkswagen Beetle, which five years after production finally ceased appears to be in no danger of being toppled from its number one spot, with 21 million manufactured between 1939 and 2003.
Number two is the Fiat 124 with some 15 million built, including the badge-engineered versions sold under the Seat, Lada, Tofas (Turkish) and Premier (Indian) badges. The Fiat 124 was first introduced in 1966 and, incredibly, is still in production under the Lada badge in Russia, where 200,000 are sold annually.
Sitting at number three is perhaps the most famous of them all - the Ford Model T. The Model T's extraordinary success can be gauged from the fact that it is only slightly behind the Fiat 124 in numbers, and was the world's best-selling car until 1972, when the VW Beetle passed it out. Not bad for a car sold as far back as 1908.
Another Fiat sits at number four: the Fiat Uno. Since its introduction in 1983, 8.5 million Unos have been sold and it's still being manufactured in Brazil.
Inspired by the iconic Citroën 2CV (of which five million were sold) the Renault 4 sits at number five with sales of eight million. Few would have ever imagined that it would far surpass the car that inspired it in the much shorter period (1961-1993) when it was on sale.
Volkswagen's Golf Mk 1 and Golf Mk 2 sit at numbers six and seven respectively - an extraordinary achievement for the Wolfsburg manufacturer. The original Golf was introduced in 1974 and is still being built in South Africa. To date, 6.9 million have been manufactured.
One of the oddity's of this list is that the Mk 1 Golf is still in production, and has outlasted the car that replaced it. The Mk 2 Golf, made between 1983 and 1991, was produced in VW factories worldwide and over six million were sold.
The Peugeot 206 is one of three cars in this list which can still be bought. Over 5.5 million have been built and the 206 is still manufactured in Peugeot factories in Argentina, France, Brazil and Iran.
Another car of French origin, and the second Renault in our list is the Renault 5 at number nine, with slightly fewer than 5.5 million sold between 1972 and 1983.
Finally, the extraordinary Mini just makes the list (ahead of the Peugeot 205) with a grand total of 5.3 million manufactured between 1959 and 2000 - some 41 years of manufacture.
The Mini is such an iconic design, it's a surprise that it's not higher up the list, but then, as we've seen, there are several surprises in the cars that make up this list.
