FOUR RETRACTABLE canopies and one archeological dig later, Meeting House Square is set to reopen this Saturday and Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) has begun to give details of events that will be taking place there under the expertly- engineered and rather aesthetically pleasing retractable canopy.

Next Thursday (December 15th), there will be a screening of Singin’ in the Rain (right) at 6.30pm, followed the following Thursday by a sold-out festive screening of Elf. The Temple Bar market will also be moving its stalls back to the square every Saturday.

The option of closing Meeting House Square’s roof creates a variety of possibilities as concerts, markets, screenings and public discussions there are no longer weather-dependent. The four umbrellas, standing at 21m tall, measuring 11m by 14m, were designed by Seán Harrington Architects and commissioned as part of the TBCT’s 20th anniversary this year. The project cost €2.4 million and was funded by TBCT and Fáilte Ireland through the Government’s National Development Plan for cultural tourism infrastructure.
