Make It New John, Duncan Campbell’s film about the making of the DeLorean car, runs until October 3rd in The Model, Sligo’s stunning new arts centre. A fusion of “documentary aesthetic with fictive moments” by the Glasgow-based Irish artist, it tells the story of John DeLorean’s famous gull-winged car and the workers at the Belfast car plant who built it. The timing couldn’t be better as DeLorean has been in the news recently with the sale of Miranda Guinness’s red coupé in the UK to an Irish buyer.
The newly designed centre, which incorporates the old Model Niland library, opened in May and is the work of architects Sheridan Woods, with McCullough Mulvin in charge of the beautiful restoration of the original 19th-century building. It not only houses exhibition and performance spaces, but also artists’ studios with breathtaking views of the surrounding city and landscape. A restaurant, to be run by pizza maker Bernadette O’Shea, is to open there next month.
