We Built This Cityis a song many Irish could sing about many cities across the world; even post-recession, the Irish are still building. However, the profile of your average local builder may be changing: Irish women are picking up their hammers and this weekend seven of them will travel to Romania as part of Habitat for Humanity Ireland's first all-women build.
The international non-profit organisation aims to eliminate housing poverty by building decent, affordable homes. To date Habitat has built more than 350,000 houses, providing shelter for more than 1.75 million people in almost 100 countries. A new Habitat house is completed somewhere in the world every 21 minutes.
On the eve of World Habitat Day on Monday, Habitat hopes its first all-women build will help raise awareness of the 1.6 billion people without homes. To learn more about Habitat for Humanity’s work or to volunteer, see http://www.habitatireland.ie/ – high heels are optional.
