ADAM PHILLIPS From Shakespeare to Plath, from Van Gogh to Donnie Darko, we've always had a fascination with madness

ADAM PHILLIPSFrom Shakespeare to Plath, from Van Gogh to Donnie Darko, we've always had a fascination with madness. But have we ever stopped to consider its opposite - sanity?

Renowned psychoanalyst and author Adam Phillips examines it in his most recent book, Going Sane. Phillips is known for his unorthodox views on psychoanalysis - he has written on topics such as tickling, boredom and flirtation - but he has also been highly praised for his erudite writing style. John Banville recently called him "one of the most exciting writers around, in any genre", while Frank Kermode has said the adjective "Phillipsian" should be coined to describe his approach. Now you have a chance to hear what Phillips has to say, in a public interview with Prof Ciarán Benson, as part of Critical Voices, the Art Council's biennial programme of public debate. It takes place at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, at 6.30pm next Friday. Admission is free, but booking is essential.
