Ana Duncan, sculptor

The annual Sculpture in Context exhibition comes of age next Thursday, when it celebrates its 21st birthday. This is its fourth year at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. "Since we moved here, it has become absolutely huge," says Ana Duncan, one of the four sculptor-organisers (Ken Drew, Beatrice Stewart and James Gannon are the others). Eighty-nine artists, from Ireland and abroad, will show 114 works in glass, ceramic, wood, bronze, stone, fabric and other materials in the largest outdoor sculpture show in the land. Duncan's offering will be one of her characteristically exaggerated female figures, in cement, rather than her more usual bronze. Sculpture in Context always has a magical quality, with beautiful, esoteric or just plain weird creations appearing unexpectedly in the landscape. You never know what you may find in the gardens, glasshouses and visitors' centre in the coming weeks. And if you want to bring a sculpture home to your own patch, you could pay as little as €45 (or as much as €8,500). www.sculptureincontext.com.
