Audiophiles who like to travel light have a dilemma about headphones. Over-ear models will block most of the background noise and deliver far better sound quality than earbuds, but their cases take up valuable space and even folding models don’t take well to being jammed into a pocket. Bose in-ear headphones (€99, www.bose.ie) are a compromise, but the sound quality is better than with most other in-ear devices, and the cables and connections are resilient. The best part is also probably the cheapest: the silicone tips that direct music into the ear canal and help hold the earbuds comfortably in place.
If there wasever a place where weekend adventurers needed weather-resistant training shoes, it's here. Helly Hansen Manifesto Beater shoes, for women and men (€95, the Outdoor Shop, Wexford) are waterproof and breathable and have a rugged cushioned sole that ought to grip the muck of Devil's Glen or the scree of Errigal.
Teko Eco Merino'sboast of "Best socks on the planet, best socks for the planet" is based on the use of organic merino wool, recycled polyester, non-toxic dyes and recycleable packaging.
