Croke Park legends
The biggest game in town – and certainly in the heart and minds of anyone with Tipperary or Kilkenny connections – is tomorrow’s All-Ireland hurling final at Croke Park. Henry Shefflin and the rest of the Kilkenny Cats are chasing their fourth win in a row, so expectations are high.
That’s something fans will be able to quiz one of the county’s hurling legends, Eddie Keher, about this afternoon. He played in 10 All-Ireland hurling finals, winning six titles, and at 2.30pm he’ll be leading a 125 Legends tour of the stadium. Croke Park’s excellent museum is well worth a visit for its vast collection, which includes hurleys, jerseys, trophies, medals, programmes and banners, as well as the new Croke Park Timeline exhibit, which documents all the important dates in the history of the stadium, including the first All-Ireland hurling final, in 1896, and the boxing match between the Clare man Muhammad Ali – it’s all about county pride in the GAA – and Al Lewis in 1972.
There are two more 125 Legends tours in the series. Next Friday at 7pm the referee Paddy Russell will lead a behind-the-scenes tour of Croke Park; then, on Saturday, September 19th, at 3.30pm, the GAA legend Mick O’Dwyer will lead the tour. That’s the day before Cork take on Kerry in the football final.
Tickets for each of 125 Legends tours cost €12 for adults, €10 for seniors and students, €7 for children or €30 for families. 01-8192349, museum.gaa.ie
