BERNICE HARRISONon alternatives to movies and the mall
TRICK 'R STREET:Any event that includes a free fireworks display and the brilliant Cois Céim dance company is all right in my book, and both will be on show as part of the Trick 'r Street Halloween festival in Portlaoise tonight.
The action begins at County Hall at 7pm, and everyone is invited to take part – dress up in the spookiest Halloween get-up you can put together and get into the spirit of the night.
The parade will be led by Buí Bolg, the street-theatre experts who have been working with 60 young people from Co Laois to create a dramatic and noisy start to the festivities. The parade will make its way to O’Moore Park for a free concert and those fireworks.
On stage will be the RTÉ television presenters Rob Ross and Sinead Kennedy, who will introduce a concert by four piece indie-rock band The Coronas, as well as a performance by Camross Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and a set from the 2fm DJ Cormac Battle.
Local teenagers have been working with Cois Céim for weeks to prepare a dance piece that will be performed on stage. The night will officially end with the fireworks display.
The entire event will be filmed by local teenagers, under the direction of Alan Keogh, and their short film will be on YouTube and premiered on RTÉ2.
