Ascent of Carrauntoohil Co Kerry guide Con Moriarty is starting a weekly walk to - and up - Carrauntoohil (above), giving visitors a chance to hike and climb in Macgillycuddy's Reeks, rich in culture, myth and folklore. Hearty walkingBaltimore, in west Co Cork, hosts a walking festival next weekend to mark World Heart Day. Two of the four walks will be on the islands of Hare and Cape Clear, split over Saturday and Sunday. Each walk will be guided by a historian, who will give a commentary along the way. All walks are between four and seven kilometres long; the pace will be relaxed and suitable for all the family. Adults €5, 10- to 15-year-olds €2.50, under-10s free. www.baltimore.ie/ festivals.
Night hikeFor something different, try a night walk. As part of Wicklow Walking Festival a night hike is being organised on Brockagh Mountain, in Glendalough, on Friday, October 26th.
