Ditch the departure tax
Four airline chiefs have urged the British government in an open letter to axe the Air Passenger Duty (APD) airport departure tax, claiming its negative impact on the UK economy outweighed any benefit from revenue raised.
The letter was signed by Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways’ parent company IAG; easyJet chief Carolyn McCall; Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary and Virgin Atlantic boss Steve Ridgway.
Willie Walsh said: “The UK has the highest APD tax in the world. This is a tax on tourism. It’s a tax on people visiting the UK and its a tax on people doing business in the UK.”
Glasson top golf resort
Midlands hotel, Glasson Country House Hotel Golf Club has been named the 2011 Golf Resort of the Year by the Golf Tour Operator Association. The Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht Affairs, Jimmy Deenihan, congratulated Glasson owners, the Reid family, on the achievement at the Gala Irish Golf Awards in Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick.
Glasson golf course, designed by Christy O Connor Jnr and situated just outside the village of Glasson in Co Westmeath, recently celebrated its 18th birthday. In the past two years Glasson has made a significant investment by adding a new banqueting suite to its facilities, making it a top wedding venue in the region.
