DROMOLAND Castle in Co Clare has opened a school of falconry, where guests can discover the thrills and excitement of falcon and hawk husbandry with master falconer, Dave Atkinson, pictured.
Discover at first hand what makes birds masters of the skies, with mesmerizing displays by Dromoland Castle’s own collection of birds of prey including owls and Harris Hawks. The school offers a range of classes including the Hawk Walk, during which the instructor explains the natural history of the birds and their role in the environment and then helps students in handling and flying one of the Harris Hawks.
“You will never forget the moment when your hawk first lands on your gloved fist. During your Hawk Walk you will learn how to handle and fly one of the school’s Harris Hawks.
“These displays are also popular with hotel guests who are looking for that something special and are especially popular at weddings and parties. We have even arranged for the wedding rings to be delivered to the altar by a bird,” he added.
Courses vary between one hour to three full days. A Hawk Walk for two people costs €60 per person – this usually takes about 90 minutes. A Hawk Walk for three to four people costs €50 per person. A full day’s falconry lesson with the Master Falconer costs €250 per head.
