A total of 1,352 women travelled from the Republic for abortions in Britain in the three months to the end of last June, according to official UK figures. Most of the women (997) were aged 20 to 34, 209 were under 20 and 146 were aged 35 or over.
The figures, issued by the Office for National Statistics in the UK, show that 425 women travelled from Northern Ireland for abortions.
The Pro-Life Campaign claimed that the number of women from the Republic obtaining abortions in Britain in the quarter was 5 per cent up on the previous year and 21 per cent higher than in the same quarter of 1995.
