10,000 backers of Indonesia's Wahid warn foes

Thousands of people have rallied in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya in support of President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Thousands of people have rallied in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya in support of President Abdurrahman Wahid.

The rally came as the embattled president was given a political reprieve by his deputy Ms Megawati Sukarnoputri and the influential military, who publicly opposed moves to accelerate impeachment proceedings against him.

At least 10,000 people, many with sickles and knives, gathered inside the compound housing the local legislature in Surabaya, the capital of Mr Wahid's home province of East Java.

Protesters carried banners reading: "If Wahid falls, the country will be destroyed".

The crowd cheered when speakers demanded that his political opponents be mutilated or executed.

About 2,000 riot police were deployed around the parliament as trucks and buses full of protesters arrived. There were no immediate reports of violence.

An investigative committee last week released a report claiming Mr Wahid knew about an illegal transfer of $4 million from the state food agency by a former business associate.

It also criticised him for failing to declare a $2 million aid donation from the ruler of neighbouring Brunei.
