Ten elderly residents have died in a fire at a care home in Scotland, it has been confirmed.

Strathclyde Fire Brigade was called to the fire at the Rosepark nursing home in Uddingston near Glasgow shortly before 5 a.m.

Forty firefighters extinguished the blaze but a fire brigade spokesman said there was a large number of fatalities because the fire had been very intense.

"The fire was well alight when the firefighters arrived," he said. Police said earlier the fire had claimed 11 lives but then revised the death toll to 10.

At least 40 people were in the privately-owned, two-storey home when the fire broke out, he said. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said its crews had dealt with 10 people who had died at the scene, and taken seven people who suffered from severe smoke inhalation to hospital. Several of the injured were in a critical condition.

Rosepark has 43 rooms and provides short-stay and long-stay services, as well as care for terminally ill residents and people with mental health problems.

Survivors of the blaze were being relocated to other nursing homes in the area, North Lanarkshire Council, which registers the home, said.
