Actor James Nesbitt has backed a call for fresh information to help in the search for the bodies of the so-called Disappeared.

He joined Wave, a charity which helps the bereaved and those traumatised by the Troubles, in promoting a freephone number and a PO Box address for use by those with confidential information on the whereabouts of the dead.

Appearing in Belfast in support of the Families of the Disappeared, he said the confidential number people can call with information is 00800-555-85500. From the US the number to call is 011-3531-47-58-002. Written information can be sent to ICLVR, PO Box 10827, Dublin 2.

While extensive searches for those killed have yielded some remains for their families to bury, 10 of the Disappeared have yet to be found.

"While the remains of some people killed during the Troubles have been found, other families have been waiting for years for information on their disappeared loved ones," he said.

"It is almost impossible to appreciate the suffering these families have had to live with. To anyone who can help end their suffering, I would simply say: please come forward."

Sandra Peake, Wave's chief executive said: "Work has been ongoing in trying to find the bodies of the Disappeared. An independent forensic team has been reviewing information received and there has been good engagement with various organisations.

"Many members of the public have also given support, but we need more information to help bring closure for the families.

"Both the UK and Irish governments have legislation in place that enables people to give information without fear of prosecution, so this will hopefully encourage people."

Nesbitt has been a patron of Wave since 2002 and was an organiser of last year's ArtWave event, when art was donated by celebrities.
