Washington - One hundred million hamburgers - one for every other adult in the US - were withdrawn from the American market yesterday, Ed Vulliamy reports. Announcing the measure on Thursday night in the face of a massive E.coli epidemic, the Agriculture Secretary, Mr Dan Glickman, said it was the largest food recall in US history.
Some 25 million pounds of beef were recalled by the Hudson Food company as it indefinitely closed down its plant in Columbus, Nebraska. Burger King is one of Hudson's customers.
