103 former top civil servants on pensions of over €100,000

The State is paying out more than €10 million each year in pensions to 103 retired public servants.

According to Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin, there are 103 public servants in receipt of pension payments in excess of €100,000 per annum.

These would include former high-earning civil servants, including secretary generals of government departments.

The annual bill to the exchequer is €65.6 million for the 1,106 former high-earning public servants receiving pensions in excess of €50,000 annually.

In a written Dáil response to John Paul Phelan (FG), Mr Howlin confirmed that 20 retired public servants are in receipt of pensions between €90,001 and €100,000, costing a minimum €1.8m per annum. He also confirmed an additional 37 retired public servants are in receipt of pensions between of €80,001 to €90,000. The annual minimum cost of paying these pensions is €2.7 million.

In addition Mr Howlin revealed that 48 retirees are on public pensions between €70,001 to €80,000 per annum with 260 in receipt of €60,001 and €70,000. The annual minimum cost of these is €18.9 million.

The Labour Minister also confirmed there are 638 on pensions between €50,000 to €60,000 costing the exchequer €31.9m per annum.
