MULTAN - Rescue workers battled yesterday to free the dead and injured after a passenger train derailed killing 126 people in one of Pakistan's worst rail disasters.
More than 150 people were also injured in the accident, the worst since 1991 when 254 died in a train crash in southern Sindh province. The crash, caused by brake failure at Mehrshah, near the city of Khanewal in Punjab happened at 4 a.m. (local time).
The Zulfikar Express was on a collision course with another passenger train until it was diverted in time on to an emergency track where it smashed headlong into a sandpile.
