140 jobs to go at Strabane textile firm

One of Northern Ireland's biggest textile companies today announced 140 job losses.

Adria confirmed the redundancies at its factory in Strabane, Co Tyrone. Last summer the hosiery firm announced it was shedding 185 workers at the plant, just four months after 175 staff lost their jobs.

In November a further 65 posts were slashed. The latest round of cuts means it will only employ 40 people in the area. An Adria spokesperson said: "Today is a very sad day for the whole business and for the Strabane area.

"Despite the best efforts of a dedicated management team and a loyal workforce, world economics in the textile sector have conspired against us."

Adria confirmed the job losses will signal the end of its manufacturing operation.

A spokesperson said the Beechmount Avenue factory will close following a 90-day consultation period with staff and union officials.

It is understood the 12-acre site has been bought by developers and the remaining workers will move to a new site in the town.

Adria claimed the restructuring programme was the result of harsh global trading conditions.
