A clarinet belonging to one of the leading figures in the 1916 Rising has been presented to the National Museum. The instrument belonged to Cmdt Michael Mallin of the Irish Citizen Army, who commanded a garrison at the College of Surgeons during the Easter Rising. Mallin is believed to have introduced the suggestion that the General Post Office be used as the rising's headquarters. He was executed in Kilmainham Gaol on May 8th, 1916.The clarinet was donated by Mr James Burke, to whom it was given by Mallin's son, and will be displayed at the National Museum in Kildare Street, Dublin.
