Some €20 million in funding has been set aside for Bus Éireann to buy a fleet of new buses.

The additional funding will be spent on 75 buses to be purchased and delivered by next year and includes an additional 21 buses for the Leinster region, Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said.

The announcement was made by the Minister today at the launch of Bus Éireann's expansion plans for the Leinster region. This expansion plan forms part of the Government's Transport 21 strategy to improve the State's transport network.

Bus Éireann's plans to upgrade its services in the Leinster region which covers services in the Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and Kildare areas, as well as parts of Westmeath, Laois and Louth.

The company plans to improve services in new residential areas, increase feeder services, provide extra late night services and increase airport and college links.

Thirteen new commuter routes are planned by the bus company including a Navan-to-Dublin City University service via Dublin Airport, a Newry-to-Dundalk service and a Portlaoise feeder service. The company plans to increase the frequency of bus services on the Asbourne-to-Dublin, Navan-to-Dublin and Wicklow-to-Dublin routes.
