Some 20 roadside cameras which can detect speeding, dangerous driving and non-compliance with seat-belt regulations are to become operational as a pilot scheme in Dublin, Louth and Meath within weeks.
Chief Supt Al McHugh of the Garda National Traffic Bureau announced details of the scheme yesterday at a seminar on road safety in Dublin.
Later this year, a penalty points system will be introduced which will allow drivers to accumulate 12 points for a variety of misdemeanours or more serious offences before automatically losing their licences. The moves are part of the Government's five-year strategy, launched in 1998, to reduce road deaths by 20 per cent by 2003.
