€200,000 awarded to family of crash victim

The wife and daughter of a man killed in a car crash in Co Limerick three years ago were awarded €200,000 at the High Court today.

The proceedings for damages were taken by Mrs Catherine Slattery, and her daughter Rachel,  of  Kilnasoolagh Park, Newmarket on Fergus, Co Clare,  against Mr John Looney of Island, Burnfort, Co Cork and Ms Kathleen Hartigan of Coolrus, Bruree, Co Limerick.

Under the settlement, Mrs Slattery is to receive €150,000 and her daughter will get €50,000.

The plaintiffs case was that Mr Francis Slattery was driving a motor vehicle on August 21st 2001, at Howardstown South, Bruree, Co Limerick when a car driven by Mr Looney drove into his path.

They said the incident was caused or contributed to by the negligence of Ms Hartigan who, they claimed,  brought her motor vehicle to a sudden and unexpected stop on the roadway causing Mr Looney to take evasive action.

As a result of the collision, Mr Slattery sustained fatal injuries.
