A £20 million contract to reduce leakage levels in the Dublin water supply, the largest of its kind undertaken in the State, has been approved by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr Dempsey, writes Christine Newman.

The contract is proposed between Dublin Corporation and Anglian Water (Ireland) Ltd. The Minister, in approving the contract, referred to the Greater Dublin Water Supply Strategic Study carried out by Generale des Eaux, which underlined the extent of water loss through leakage. He said that too high a proportion of the water, so expensively collected and treated by local authorities, was lost in the distribution to customers.

In 1998 alone £177 million was being invested in capital schemes.
