Cannabis resin with an estimated street value of €20 million has been seized by the Garda National Drugs Unit in one of the largest cannabis seizures in the past four years, Gardaí are believed to have raided a warehouse in Swords, north Dublin, seizing 1.6 tonnes of cannabis resin. The operation was headed by Det Chief Supt Cormac Gordon.
A Garda spokeswoman described the find as "significant" and said the resin originated in Spain and would have been sold on the Irish market. The cannabis was in three large pallets containing individually wrapped bars of the resin. Gardaí believe it came in a shipment. No arrests have been made so far.
The drugs were taken to the Garda Technical Bureau at Garda Headquarters, in the Phoenix Park for forensic tests.
The last major haul of cannabis resin occurred in June last year, when gardaí seized €2.5 million worth of the drug from a lorry in Co Meath. The vehicle was stopped at Newtown Commons, Ashbourne, and 200 kg of cannabis was found.
