Gardai in Galway have arrested 25 people for public order offences in the city centre over the Bank Holiday weekend. On Saturday night 16 people were arrested following disturbances, particularly around Eyre Square, while a further nine were arrested on Sunday night. All of the arrests were made from about 10 p.m. onwards and the vast majority of them were related to alcohol abuse and street violence. Gardai said they have established a new public order unit to monitor the behaviour of people in the city centre late at night.
"Everyone arrested will be summonsed to appear before the local court," said Insp Tony O'Donnell. "We have to adopt such a tough approach because of what goes on at night during the weekends. People who get drunk and cause trouble can expect to pay the price for their actions."
