The British Embassy has rescued 26 tourists stranded at Kathmandu airport by riots sparked by the massacre of Nepal's royal family, the British Foreign Office has said.
A four-vehicle convoy collected the tourists - 23 Britons, two Canadians and a Bengali - who had been stranded due to a curfew and a ban on all traffic through the capital, a foreign office spokesman told reporters.
He would not speculate on the safety of an estimated 100 Britons still trapped in Kathmandu.
The tourists were taken to a nearby guest house where they had already booked accommodation, the spokesman said.
The Foreign Office has advised against all travel to Nepal.
Rioting erupted yesterday just hours after King Gyanendra was crowned following the deaths of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and six of their closest relatives in a palace massacre on Saturday.
The crown prince and heir, Dipendra, who was wounded in the shooting, died on Monday. He was initially blamed for the massacre but officials later said the shooting was an "accident" caused by an automatic weapon which "exploded".
