Three Limerick men are being questioned in connection with the shooting and stabbing of a 25-year-old man at the weekend. They are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for 24 hours.
The incident took place at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday at Hyde Road, when the man received shotgun wounds to the legs, and was stabbed in the left side. He also received head injuries.
He was able to raise the al arm himself and alerted a passing Garda patrol car. He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital, where he was described as comfortable. Gardai are trying to establish the motive for the attack, which was described as "a brutal assault and was unusual in that the man was both shot and stabbed".
