In Dublin, a man in his 50s died after he was struck by a car yesterday evening while crossing Amiens Street in the city centre.

In Co Roscommom, a teenager died and two others were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling went into a river outside Castlerea. The accident occurred on the main Castlerea-Roscommon road at about 11 p.m. on Saturday when the car went into a tributary of the River Suck.

Ms Philomena Tighe (19), from Glinsk, Co Galway, was killed, and the woman driver and a male back-seat passenger escaped from the car. Both were taken to Roscommon General Hospital.

A man who died on Saturday night when his car struck another vehicle at Sheetram, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, was named yesterday as Mr Seamus Duffy (46) of Lough Egish.

In a separate incident, a woman who was injured yesterday afternoon while hill-walking in Co Wicklow was airlifted from the scene by the Irish Marine Emergency Service (IMES). The injured walker, who was thought to have broken her leg, was one of a party of nine walkers in the Glendalough area.

She was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.
