Some £400,000 worth of cannabis resin was seized by gardai from a car when they arrested two men in Dublin on Tuesday night. The men were arrested after their car was stopped at the end of a short chase through the Coolock area.
It is believed they were apprehended while dropping off a quantity of drugs. About 50 kilos of cannabis were seized. The drugs are believed to have originated in Amsterdam.
The men had been under Garda surveillance for a week and had been the subject of a joint operation with Dutch police. One man is in his 20s, while the other is over 30. Both have been the subject of attention from the National Drugs Unit for some time.
It is believed that gardai pursuing the men had their cars rammed during the chase. The pair were arrested under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act. They are being held in Santry Garda station, where they can be detained for seven days.
