German police detained 50 English and German soccer fans after skirmishes following Germany's quarter-final win over Argentina last night.

Riot police had moved in to separate hundreds of English and German fans in Gelsenkirchen after they briefly clashed as the Germans celebrated their progress to the semi-finals.

Police in helmets moved on to the main street to divide the two groups after they threw bottles at each other.

Thousands of England fans are expected in the industrial city for their team's quarter-final against Portugal today.

A spokesman for Gelsenkirchen police said 25 English and 25 Germans had been detained. One English fan was arrested for throwing a bottle and one German supporter had been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Hosts Germany beat Argentina 4-2 on penalties to set up a semi-final with Italy, who beat Ukraine 3-0 in the late match.
