Up to 500 jobs may be lost at the Jacobs factory in Tallaght following the rejection of a survival plan by staff at the company.

An employee meeting was today called at which the workforce were told that without implementation of the Labour Relations Court plan, which was rejected by staff last weekend, the factory could close within weeks.

Management at the biscuit factory have been seeking the implementation of more flexible working arrangements.

A spokeswoman for Jacobs said she could not say how many jobs, if any, would be lost if the changes were not accepted.

Local Fianna Fail TD Charlie O'Connor said that he is keeping Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheal Martin, who is in the US, updated on the situation.

"The minister agreed that job creation agencies would be placed on stand-by in case they are needed in the event of jobs being lost," he said.

"I would again urge the two sides to put in every effort now to resolve their differences."

It is understood crisis talks are to take place tomorrow in a bid to save jobs at the plant.
