The world's largest toymaker, Mattel, yesterday recalled more than 55,000 toys due to concerns that the products contain high levels of lead.
The firm pulled its Fisher-Price "Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat" because the paint used to apply the logo to the toy is believed to be affected.
Some 12,000 of the recalled products have been sold in Ireland and Britain since June of this year. The recall is Mattel's fourth in the last six months and has led the EU Commission to undertake a review of its toy safety rules which is due to be completed next month.
Fine Gael spokesman on health Dr James Reilly said the recall was "worrying". Companies must ensure standards are being maintained when they outsource operations. "It is worrying that quality control is failing and this recurring issue is something a Dáil committee should perhaps examine."
Yesterday's announcement follows a massive recall of two million Mattel toys worldwide in August due to safety fears about some products made in China. A subcontractor had used unauthorised paint to make the recalled batch. Mattel is asking consumers to contact its website or helpline for a complete description of the recalled model. Customers returning the products will be allowed to replace it with an alternative toy of their choice. They do not need to have the toy's original packaging or receipt.
