New Delhi - Fifty-five people, mostly women and children, were drowned after a boat carrying around 70 passengers sank in an eastern Indian river.
Police said 15 people swam to safety after the overloaded boat capsized in the Bagmati river near the city of Patna, capital of the state of Bihar. Earlier reports put the number of passengers at 90 and said 40 people swam ashore after the boat got caught in a whirlpool.
