Fifty-five people in Youghal, Co Cork are to lose their jobs following the announcement that an office products company is to close.
Elba Office Products said today it will close in September. This is the latest in a series of job cuts in the Cork region in the last two weeks.
Yesterday Pfizer confirmed at least 65 jobs were to go by the end of the year and 480 more are under threat as the company plans to sell two units by 2009.
Thomson Scientific and Motorola have also announced their intention to reduce their work forces.
Today also saw a number of multinational firms announce their intention to reduce their worldwide workforce, placing a question mark over 1,000 people working with these firms in Ireland.
Alcatel-Lucent said today it plans to cut 12,500 jobs worldwide in the next three years. The company has 260 full-time and 130 contract staff.
Also today Nortel said it was planning to restructure. It employs 975 people in Ireland.
