More than 6,000 people are reported missing in Ireland every year, according to figures released today.

The data comes from Missing in Ireland Support Service (Miss), a voluntary service which has launched its annual appeal this afternoon. The organisation has called on people who are listed as missing or who have lost touch with their families to get in contact with them over the Christmas period.

"This year while most of us are celebrating, there will be many families who are anxiously awaiting some news about a missing loved one," said the organisation's chairman, Dermot Browne.

"A message from this person could be the best present that a family can get. A phone call, card or even a short note to say that you are alive and well will bring much-needed joy this Christmas."

Although more than 95 per cent of those reported missing are located within a short period of time, there are cases that remain unsolved after many years.

"People go missing for a variety of reasons – in some cases, people lose touch with their family and feel they cannot make contact after an extended period of time," said Mr Browne.

"We would encourage people to get in touch with their families, especially at this time of year."

Earlier this year, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern announced that he is considering establishing a dedicated missing persons unit.

The Missing Persons Helpline said it is willing to facilitate contact between people. It can be contacted at 1890 442 552 or via e- mail at info@missingpersons.ie.
