Up to 600 young pigs are believed to have been killed in a fire at one of Kerry’s largest pig production plants in the north of the county at the weekend.

Gardaí are investigating the fire which broke out at one of three units at the large piggery owned by Kerry Pig Producers Ltd at Clouneen, Causeway.

Three units of the fire service in Kerry from surrounding areas – from Ballybunion, Listowel and Tralee – were called to the fight the blaze in the pig unit.

The cause of the fire is unknown but is not believed to have been suspicious.

The piggery was acquired by the management from the Kerry Group some years back.
