More than 8,000 people were treated in hospital in a single year for self-harming, according to figures released today.

The HSE's National Office of Suicide Prevention is holding its second annual Suicide Prevention Forum today.

It will see the release of the Annual Report of Self Harm Registry, which reveals that 8,600 people arrived at hospitals in 2005 due to deliberate self-harming.

Minister for State at the Department of Health and Children Tim O'Malley will announce the registry, with agencies involved in the area of suicide prevention and mental health promotion discussing its findings.
