Some €80,000 of suspected drugs money was seized in Dublin Airport on Friday evening, Customs said today.

The cash was found in the suitcase of a 28-year-old Dublin man who was about to get on a flight to Amsterdam.

A Revenue spokesman said Judge Patrick Clyne of Dublin District Court had granted an application for a detention order for three months to allow Customs Officers to carry out further investigations.

A total of €2.3 million in cash has been detained by Customs officers in Dublin Airport under the Proceeds of Crime Act, since the beginning of 2008.

A Customs spokeswoman said Friday's seizure was made during routine inspections at the airport. It is not believed to be connected with the international investigation into organised crime that emerged last week.

In the past week six people have been arrested in the three jurisdictions and a total of 230 handguns, thousands of rounds of ammunition, hundreds of thousands of euro notes and drugs with a street value of around €3.2 million were seized in Belfast, Dublin and Amsterdam.
