Four out of five Americans polled this weekend believe the United States should hold off on using military force to retaliate against the worst terror attack in US history.
Eighty one per cent of those polled by
NBC News
and the
Wall Street Journal
said that before using military force, the United States should be "completely sure who is specifically responsible" for attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and on the Pentagon near Washington.
Seventy three per cent of the 821 people surveyed said they were confident the United States would capture or kill Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the attacks.
Sixteen per cent surveyed said they were worried that a family member or friend might have been killed or injured in the attacks.
Half of the Americans polled said they have "a great deal" of confidence in US President Mr George W. Bush's ability to manage the crisis; 29 per cent said they have "quite a bit of confidence" in the president.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
New York Mayor Mr Rudolph Giuliani said 4,957 people were missing and 190 confirmed dead after. The toll of missing and injured at the Pentagon crash site totalled 187, and 45 died in the Pennsylvania aircraft crash.
