A mentally handicapped man who was sexually abused while in the care of a religious order over 40 years ago yesterday agreed an €95,000 out-of-court settlement.
The man alleged that he was seriously sexually abused twice by a member of the Brothers of Charity order.
The brother involved, who is now aged 87, was named in legal proceedings before the High Court, but cannot be identified for legal reasons. He is awaiting a hearing in another court, facing more than 60 charges of indecently assaulting three other boys.
The man in yesterday's case was aged four when he was placed in care at the Lota home for special needs children at Glanmire, Cork, in the late 1950s. In the High Court in Cork, Mr Justice Declan Budd approved the settlement and costs.
